This is where we draw the line. Greece can't have great architecture, historical importance, incredible beaches, and breathtaking mountains. It's too much good, we call shenanigans. Seriously just look at this.
This town has only one road with one lane that goes through it. Quite the site to see tour buses try and squeeze through it.
When it snows, Greeks come up to these mountains and ski. May only be for two months out of the year but still.
They certainly look skiable
Just beyond the town are the remains of Delphi.
In the center you can see the museum they've built and off to the right is what is left of Delphi
I say "what is left of Delphi", but truth be told, quite a lot of it is still there. In many ways a lot more than what is at the Acropolis.
Shot from atop Delphi
The best example of this is that many of the rocks in Delphi still have the original script on them
This made Katie Geek out
...Or should I say Greek out?
...I am sorry...
One of the larger structures still standing in Delphi, you can see the original marble(darker) mixed in with new (light and bright) to help recreate its original look. Especially love that you can see original sculpting at the top
Artsy filter cause it looks kool
Near the top of the ruins is a nearly intact stadium of seats
It's all the more impressive when you consider these are a few thousand years old, and still so much stands.
That's not even considering the crazy pieces they had in the museum.
Again you can see newer bits, but the majority is the real deal
These would line the top rim of buildings. This is a depiction of Giants vs Gods
You can see Athena Stabbing a giant on the ground
Or this poor guy getting mauled by a tiger. The detail!
Or Spartans holding the line
More script still around
You guessed it, Spartan helmets
The remains of a great bronze bull.
Yes that is original gold
These next pieces actually have their original color on them. Craziness.
This guy is either telling jokes or singing
The piece below is an intriguing one. This statue represent the bonds that make up all of us.
While not directly DNA, the similarities are fascinating.
Greek philosopher Socrates. Wiser because of the beard
The Charioteer of Delphi
Certainly one of the most impressive pieces in the museum is the Charioteer. Made completely of bronze, the detail and technique that was put into making this is astounding. Nearly as impressive as it being from around 400 B.C. and still standing. Extremely cool.
Finally a sculpture of what Delphi looked like back then
Katie and I thoroughly enjoyed Delphi and it is absolutely a must if you ever plan on going to Greece. Just as important as seeing the Acropolis and far more glimpses of the past. A huge highlight for us.
Leaving Delphi meant another three hours back to Athens on the bus. We mostly just listened to audio-books and pod-casts on the way. But our night was not over, oh no. We had dinner reservations at a two Michelin star restaurant; Funky Gourmet.
Modest on the outside, tasty on the inside
We had never been to a Michelin star restaurant before and Funky Gourmet exceeded expectations.
Going with a theme of taking a traditional Greek dish and putting a chefy spin on it, the food was extraordinary.
To give you an idea, this is what they brought us first. It's basically chips n dip. The shovel is to eat what is left of the dip.
This was a Greek Taco
Lamb Shanks
Hidden inside that ball is a chocolate soup
Nothing wrong with that
Atop dry ice, those golden globes are spheres of chocolate with orange juice inside
With expectations high, we came away from Funky Gourmet with full stomachs and smiles. Someplace we would take others if we ever go back to Athens. *wink*
We were moving all of Day 4, always going somewhere with something to do. But that ended up making it one of our most memorable days in Greece.
Day 5 had nothing planned except a plane back to Turkey that wasn't leaving until 9pm. So the idea was to just enjoy ourselves however we saw fit in Greece for the day.
I'm sure we'll find something to do...
